The government has given a public holiday to mourn the death of late CPN (UML) Vice Chairman and former Speaker Subas Chandra Nembang on Thursday.

Issuing a press note today, the Ministry of Home Affairs has informed that a public holiday has been given on Thursday.

“A meeting of the Council of Ministers today decided to grant a public holiday on Thursday (September 14, 2023) to mourn the death of Constituent Assembly chairperson, former Speaker, and a member of House of Representatives Subas Chandra Nembang in honor of his commendable role in promulgating the Constitution and establishing the democratic republic. On this day, when the last rites for Nembang will be performed, the national flag will be lowered half-mast in all the government offices in the country and Nepali embassies and diplomatic missions abroad,” reads the notice issued by the ministry.

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ilam-2, Nembang died of cardiac arrest last night.

Nembang had become the Speaker of the reinstated House of Representatives in 2063 BS, the Speaker of the Legislature Parliament in 2064 BS. He had also served as the Chairperson and the Speaker of the Constituent Assembly in 2065 BS and 2070 BS and the Speaker in 2072 BS.

He served as the member of the National Assembly from 2048 BS to 2052 BS before becoming as the member of the House of Representatives.

Nembang, who developed his image as an accommodative political figure, had been elected as a lawmaker in the House of Representatives elections in 2065 BS and in the Constituent Assembly elections in 2064 and 2070 BS from Ilam-2.
