Former Prime Minister and senior leader of the CPN United Socialist Party Jhalnath Khanal has said that a powerful high-level investigation committee should be formed to check the irregularities in the distribution of citizenship in the past. Presenting a separate 16-page written document at the party meeting, Khanal said that a high-level, powerful investigation committee should be formed to investigate the irregularities in the distribution of citizenship in the past and cancel the citizenship of non-Nepalis.
Khanal said that the anti-national act should be stopped forever. He said, “Let’s repeal all citizenship laws inspired by political and factional interest and make a new citizenship law on a sustainable and long-term basis, keeping national interests at the forefront.” Khanal argued that if only 0.5 percent of the population enters Nepal from India and China, the national identity will change.
People from India taking Nepali citizenship is completely against the national interest. The government has been doing the job of giving citizenship to Indians who came to Nepal from India at different times. Despite the opposition, the 2046 Chait end was made the cutoff year, again, 2063 Mansir was made another cutoff year, again, 2072 was made to give citizenship to those born in Nepal. All these steps are against the national interest.
“Now again, in 2080, another law was made. Many are getting citizenship through this too. If Nepalese get it, it’s fine. But there is concern that even non-citizens will get citizenship. Many people of Indian origin have taken Nepali citizenship from one cutoff year after another. This is completely against the national interest”, Khanal said.
