Last week, around 100 kg of smuggled gold was seized outside the Tribhuvan International Airport. However, the exact amount of gold in it has not been officially confirmed yet.

The gold is kept safe in Mint Division of Nepal Rastra Bank

The total weight of the items placed in the cartons is 155 kg. In which the Department of  Revenue Investigation has  estimated that there is 100 kg of gold.

The gold is yet to be weighed officially. The work of weighing gold and measuring its quality is done by the Mint Division. Why the gold delivered to Mint Division on Thursday has not been measured yet, has become a matter of curiosity for many.

However, the Mint Division cannot even open the sealed gold by itself. A letter should be sent by the Department of Revenue to collect the gold. And, it also needs the help of the police.

Thaneshwar Acharya, head of the Mint Division, told Nepalkhabar, "We should be allowed to disclose the sealed gold that has been sealed. We have no right. A letter comes to Nepal Rastra Bank for that. So far, the right we have got is only to protect it."

He said that on Thursday afternoon, the gold was 155 kg including the case.

The Department of Revenue Investigation has said that gold weighing is not an immediate priority. An official of the department said that as the matter is under investigation, efforts are being made to recover more gold rather than measuring it.

"As it is estimated that the gold of the gold importing company may be added, we are preparing to collect it at once if possible," the official told Nepalkhabar. He said that more gold is likely to be recovered.

The department has proceeded with the study with the assessment that 1800 kg of gold may have been imported into Nepal in the last three months. Given the previous documents of the gold importing company, the department has also found the data that additional goods were brought in the same modus operandi as the goods imported from Nepal last week.

The Department of Revenue Investigation has collected the data from the Customs Office. It has access to the systems of the Department of Customs and Internal Revenue.

Collected data show the same kinds of goos have been imported for the last three months. It has been found that 100 kg of gold was imported in the name of the company called Ready Trade Pvt. Ltd.

A document recovered from the same company reveals to have imported 1800 kg of goods in the last three months.

Looking at the nature of the goods imported by the same company and the places where they come from, they are all of the same type. Brake shoes, brake pads, and electric accessories are mentioned in the document. The department said that the total weight of the imported goods was 1800 kg. It is being studied to verify the amount of gold mentioned and its quality.
