The government has brought the 'Human Papillomavirus' (HPV) vaccines against cervical cancer. The Ministry of Health and Population has procured 20,000 doses of vaccines from China.

Dr. Abhiyan Gautam, Chief of the Immunization Section at the Family Welfare Division under the Department of Health Services, said that vaccination will protect women from cervical cancer.

Gautam informed that girls in the age group between 10 to 14 years will be vaccinated to prevent them from cervical cancer.

He said that the Ministry of Health will select the districts and the girls will be vaccinated, accordingly.

According to him, two doses of the vaccine are given in a gap of six months. The government bought the vaccine from China for the first time.

Dr. Arun Shahi, an oncologist at the Patan Institute of Health Sciences, said that women in remote areas will be protected from cancer through vaccination.

He mentioned that most women in Nepal suffer from cervical cancer and added that according to World Health Organization (WHO) data, six women die a day.

"Six people who come to hospital die every single day from this cancer," he said, "There is a risk of cervical cancer in women who have unprotected sex, marry at a young age, and smoke a lot."
