China condemns U.S., UK's comments on its national security law

Chinese Foreign Ministry's Commissioner's Office in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Friday condemned comments by the U.S. and the UK over its national security law, reaffirming that the law has helped the HKSAR enter into stability and prosperity from disorder and chaos, and other countries should not interfere into China's domestic affairs.

The two countries issued a statement and debated in their legislative bodies over China's security law in recent days as this year marks the 26th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China and the third anniversary of the implementation of the national security law.

The commissioner's office said that since the implementation of the national security law, Hong Kong's rule of law and business environment has improved, and the society has become more stable and united.

A recent poll showed that more than 80% of Hong Kong residents surveyed believed the HKSAR's security situation has been "improved" or "greatly improved." The poll was conducted by the Federation of New Territories Youth in April. Another survey conducted in March by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong showed that over 70 percent of its members have confidence in its rule of law.

"Facts have proved that the national security law is the mainstay of Hong Kong's security and the guardian of its prosperity and stability," the office said.

It further stated that Hong Kong is a law-based society, and criminals like Jimmy Lai were arrested and trialed in accordance with the law, which is justified, legitimate and lawful.

"External forces have no right to point the finger," it said.

The office stressed that the Chinese government is determined to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests, urging the U.S. and the UK to stop interfering in China's domestic affairs when they are preoccupied with loads of domestic problems.
