Appeal to President to grant amnesty to Resham Chaudhary

The government has made a recommendation to the President to grant amnesty to Resham Chaudhary, who is serving a prison sentence on the charge of orchestrating the Tikapur massacre.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma said that the decision was taken at the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Sunday.

According to Sharma, 50 percent of the sentence has been recommended for waiving for some prisoners.

"A few weeks ago, the Supreme Court also upheld Resham’s sentence by the High Court", she said, "Since he has already served 50% of the sentence, it was decided to waive the rest of the sentence." It has also been decided to waive the sentence of some other prisoners.

According to Sharma, the recommendation has been made to this effect after taking legal advice and suggestions.

Earlier on May 26, President Ram Chandra Paudel had sent a file for amnesty to Chaudhary to the Ministry of Home Affairs for implementation.

At that time, the President's Office also sent the petition filed by Sharada, the wife of Nepal Police Inspector Keshav Bohara, who was murdered in Tikapur, to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
